FAQ

What Should We Wear?

Tips on choosing the perfect outfits for your portrait session.

Getting dressed for a photo shoot can feel surprisingly stressful — but it doesn't have to be. A little planning goes a long way, and I'm here to help you every step of the way.

Keep it coordinated, not matching. You don't need everyone in the same shirt. Choose a color palette of two or three complementary tones and let each person express their own style within it. Think navy, cream, and warm rust — or sage, white, and denim.

Opt for texture over pattern. Chunky knits, linen, denim, and soft layers photograph beautifully. Bold logos, busy prints, and neon colors tend to pull focus away from the faces you actually want to remember.

Dress for the season and the setting. West Seattle's outdoor locations have a relaxed, natural feel. Outfits that feel comfortable and "you" will always look better than something stiff or formal that you're tugging at all afternoon.

Don't forget the details. Shoes, accessories, and hair all show up in photos more than people expect. Keep jewelry simple, and make sure everyone's shoes are clean and in good shape — yes, including the kids!

When in doubt, send me a photo of your outfit ideas before the session. I love helping families pull their looks together.

How Long Is a Session?

Most children portrait sessions run about 30 minutes. In that time I'm able to photograph 1-2 children individually and together. I'll return 15 photos to you from this session in both color and black and white.

Family sessions run about 60 to 90 minutes — and that's intentional. It's enough time to let everyone relax, get a few wiggles out, and capture some genuinely beautiful candid moments without anyone melting down.

Here's what a typical session looks like:

  • The first 10–15 minutes are usually a warm-up. Kids (and adults!) need a little time to get comfortable in front of the camera, and I never rush that.

  • The middle stretch is where the magic happens — I'll guide you through a few loose prompts while keeping things light and fun.

  • We wrap up with a few classic family groupings so you have those timeless shots alongside the candid ones.

A few things to plan for:

  • Choose a session time that works with your kids' moods and schedules. Late afternoon light is gorgeous, and well-rested, well-fed kids make for the best photos.

  • Build in a little buffer so you're not rushing from another obligation. Arriving stressed makes it harder to settle in.

  • Toddlers and babies may need extra time or a snack break — totally normal and always welcome.

If you have a newborn or a larger extended family group, reach out and we'll talk through the right session length for your situation.

Where Do You Shoot?

A guide to my favorite locations for stunning portraits.

One of my favorite things about shooting in West Seattle is how much natural beauty we have right outside our doors. I work almost exclusively on location — no studio, no backdrops, just real light and real places that feel like home.

Here are a few of my go-to spots:

Lincoln Park is my most-requested location, and for good reason. You get towering trees, dappled light, open meadows, and even a stretch of rocky waterfront — all in one place. It works beautifully in every season.

Alki Beach is perfect for that golden hour glow. The open sky, the water, and the relaxed beach vibe make for images that feel bright, warm, and timeless. Early evening sessions here are magical.

The West Seattle Junction area offers a more urban, neighborhood feel — great for families who want something a little different, with charming streets and local character as your backdrop.

Your own backyard or neighborhood is always an option, and honestly sometimes the best one. Home sessions capture something studios never can: the real, everyday life your family actually lives.

Not sure which location is right for you? Tell me a little about your family's vibe and I'll point you in the right direction. I scout each location with the season and time of day in mind, so the light always works in your favor.
